The Power of Scent in Daily Life
Over the last few months, I’ve been reminded of the simple joys that can lift our spirits, calm our minds, and energise our bodies — and one of the most delightful discoveries has been aromatherapy. We often overlook the power of scent in our daily lives, but science tells us it has a profound effect on our brain and wellbeing.
How Aromatherapy Works
Aromatherapy works because our sense of smell is closely linked to the limbic system, the part of our brain that controls emotions, memory, and even certain physiological functions. Inhaling a scent can reduce stress, improve mood, or give us an energising boost — all without a prescription or complicated routines. Essential oils like Jasmine and citrus can awaken us, while Lavender soothes and calms, helping prepare us for rest. It’s a gentle, natural way to care for ourselves.
Aromatherapy at HelpingMinds
I feel so blessed to have Jane on our team at HelpingMinds. She has run aromatherapy workshops for us, sharing her knowledge and guiding us to explore the scents that resonate most with each of us. There is something incredibly joyful about being in an office where these scents are not just present but thoughtfully crafted. A few months ago, I walked in and discovered a special blend Jane had created using Jasmine. With each inhale, I felt energised and uplifted — a small, beautiful reminder that self-care can be woven into even the most ordinary of days.
A Personal Journey of Discovery
What’s wonderful is that we live in a time when information is literally at our fingertips. Courses on aromatherapy, tips for blending oils, and advice on how to use scents for focus, relaxation, or sleep are easy to find. There’s never been a better moment to explore what works for each of us. I’ve found it truly is a personal journey. Each of us responds differently to scents, so experimentation is key. What energises me may be different for someone else, and that’s the joy of it — finding your own favourites and noticing how they make you feel.
My Go-To Blends
For me, Jasmine and citrus blends are my go-to during the day. They awaken my senses and give me a little spark to carry me through tasks, meetings, or busy mornings. In the evening, I reach for Lavender. Just a few gentle breaths of its calming aroma help me let go of the day and settle into rest. Aromatherapy has taught me that self-care doesn’t need to be complicated; sometimes it’s as simple as noticing a scent and letting it guide your mood.
Small Rituals, Big Impact
It’s also a reminder that caring for ourselves is an act of kindness. Taking the time to explore aromas, to pause and breathe them in, is a moment of presence and attention we give to ourselves. In a world that moves so quickly, these small rituals — walking into an office that smells inviting, placing a few drops of oil in a diffuser, or inhaling a favourite scent — can ground us, restore our energy, and bring joy.
A Gentle Practice of Self-Care
Aromatherapy has become a personal practice for me, and it’s amazing to see its effect on those around me as well. Each blend, each inhale, is an opportunity to connect with ourselves in a gentle, mindful way. And in learning what works for us individually, we create small moments of care and delight that carry us through the day, one breath at a time.
