Using Music for Emotional Release: How music can evoke emotions and act as a release for stress

I still remember dancing around as a child, hairbrush in hand like a microphone, completely lost in the music. The excitement, the freedom, the sheer joy of moving and singing as loudly as I wanted – it’s a feeling that has stayed with me all these years. Over time, I’ve realised that same joy and release is still available to me now, just in different ways. Music isn’t just entertainment; it’s a way to connect with my emotions, release stress, and create pockets of calm and happiness in everyday life.

Singing at Home

One of the simplest ways I use music is by singing at home. I don’t worry about pitch or performance – it’s not about perfection, it’s about presence. Whether I’m tidying up or making a cup of tea, singing becomes a little act of self-care. It’s a moment where I can breathe, let go of tension, and allow myself to just be. Those small moments, much like my hairbrush-microphone days, are a gentle sanctuary for my wellbeing.

Singing in the Car

I’ve also discovered the joy of singing in the car on the way to work. There’s something about combining motion, rhythm, and lyrics that helps me shake off the night’s worries and start fresh. Even if I’m rushing, those few minutes singing along to a favourite track lift my mood, energise me, and create a sense of momentum. It’s a little ritual that reminds me I can start the day with joy, even in ordinary moments.

Music as Calm and Perspective

Over the past few years, I’ve added another small ritual to my workday. In my office, I have YouTube playing a relaxing soundtrack, while fish swim slowly across the screen. Watching them glide gently underwater, accompanied by soft music, creates a sense of calm I hadn’t realised I needed. It reminds me to pause, breathe, and take a step back from the busyness. In those moments, I reconnect with the bigger picture – the ebb and flow of life, the rhythms beyond my to-do list.

Lyrics as Positive Mantras

I’ve also noticed how certain song lyrics act almost like mantras. Lines that speak of resilience, hope, or self-kindness stick with me long after the music stops. Sometimes, when a challenge arises, I quietly repeat a lyric in my head, and it shifts my perspective. Music, in that way, becomes both emotional release and gentle encouragement – a reminder I can face whatever comes with a steadier heart.

Everyday Practice

Using music like this has taught me that emotional release doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be as simple as belting out a chorus while making dinner, humming along in the shower, letting a favourite song carry me down the road, or simply sitting in front of a calming video while working. These everyday moments are where music quietly works its magic.

What I’ve Learned

Music has become a companion in my life – a way to release, reflect, and recharge. It reminds me that self-care doesn’t always have to be planned or deliberate. Sometimes, it’s the simple joy of a song, a lyric that resonates, a melody that moves you, or even fish swimming across a screen that leaves the deepest impression on our wellbeing.

What song, sound, or simple ritual could you bring into your day to release tension, create calm, and reconnect with the bigger picture?
